Why does the GIF only cover part of my video?
Set "duration" to control how many seconds are converted. Longer clips make much larger GIF files.

Why is my GIF file so large?
GIF is an old format that stores each frame with limited compression, so file size grows fast with duration, frame rate, and width. To shrink a GIF, cut the clip shorter, lower the frame rate to 10-12 fps, and reduce the width. A 3-second, 480px, 12 fps GIF is usually a good balance of smoothness and size.
Should I use a GIF, or WebP/MP4 instead?
Use a GIF when you specifically need the universal, auto-playing, no-controls behavior GIFs are known for (chat apps, README files, email). Making a Great GIF from a Video Clip

The GIF format was designed in 1987, and its age shapes everything about how animated GIFs look and how big they get. Unlike modern video, a GIF stores a sequence of full images and is limited to a 256-color palette per frame. That single constraint is the reason GIFs can look banded or grainy and why they balloon in size so quickly. The good news is that a few deliberate choices — about palette, frame rate, and dimensions — make the difference between a muddy 20 MB file and a crisp, shareable one.

Why a two-pass palette matters

Because a GIF can only use 256 colors, the choice of which 256 colors is critical. A single-pass conversion guesses a generic palette and often produces visible banding in gradients and skin tones. A two-pass approach first analyses the whole clip to build a custom palette tuned to your specific footage, then applies it with dithering to smooth the transitions. Frame rate, width, and length are your size dials

GIF file size is driven by three things you control. Frame rate:10–12 fps looks smooth for most clips; going to 24–30 fps doubles or triples the size and is only worth it for fast motion. Width:most GIFs are viewed small, so 480px is plenty — every extra pixel multiplies across every frame. Duration:keep it short. GIFs are a loop, not a movie, and a punchy 2–4 second clip both reads better and stays lightweight.

When not to use a GIF

GIFs are unbeatable for one thing: a short, silent, auto-looping animation that plays anywhere with zero setup — perfect for chat reactions, documentation, and email. But if you are posting to a platform that supports modern formats, an animated WebP or a muted, looping MP4gives you the same effect with full color and often 5–10× smaller files. Match the format to where the animation will live rather than defaulting to GIF out of habit.
