Use animated WebP for the web when you want small files with full color and optional transparency. Use GIF only when the destination (an old app, some chat clients, email) doesn't support WebP. Use a muted, looping MP4 when the clip is longer or you're posting to a social platform — it's the most efficient of the three for anything beyond a few seconds.

Animated WebP: The Modern GIF Replacement

WebP is a modern image format from Google that handles still images, transparency, and animation in a single file — and it was built specifically to fix everything that makes GIFs heavy and dated. An animated WebP is essentially a tiny video dressed up as an image: it loops automatically, needs no player controls, and drops into a web page like any other picture, but at a fraction of a GIF's size. For web use, it is almost always the better choice.

Why it beats GIF so decisively

A GIF is capped at 256 colors per frame and uses primitive compression, so it looks banded and bloats quickly. WebP animation is built on the same VP8/VP9 technology as modern video, giving it a full 24-bit color range and both lossy and lossless modes. In practice the same clip as an animated WebP is commonly 60–90% smallerthan the GIF while looking cleaner — especially on gradients, skin tones, and anything with subtle color.

Tuning quality, frame rate, and width

Three settings shape the result. Quality (around 75 is a good default) trades detail against size much like JPEG does. Frame rateof 10–15 fps keeps most clips smooth without inflating the file; reserve higher rates for fast motion. And widthshould match how the animation is displayed — 480px is plenty for most on-page use. Because WebP compresses so efficiently, you can usually afford a bit more quality here than you would with a GIF and still end up with a smaller file.

The one thing to watch: support

Every current browser plays animated WebP, so for websites it's safe. The gap is in some older apps, email clients, and a few messaging platforms that still expect GIF. The rule of thumb: choose WebP when you control the destination (your own site or app) and fall back to GIF only when you need to guarantee playback somewhere old. When in doubt, a short MP4 is the most universally efficient option of all.
