What if I only enter a width?

Will resizing change my aspect ratio?
Not if you use a standard preset — 480p, 720p, and 1080p all keep the usual 16:9 shape. If you enter a custom width and height that don't match the original ratio, the video can look stretched. To avoid that, set only one dimension in custom mode and let the other scale automatically.
What resolution should I upload to social media?
1080p (1920×1080) is the sweet spot for YouTube, feed videos, and most platforms — higher than that is often re-compressed on their end anyway. For vertical Stories and Reels, 1080×1920 is standard. Downscaling a 4K clip to 1080p before uploading also makes the file far smaller with no visible difference on a phone.

Choosing the Right Video Resolution

A video's resolution is simply how many pixels make up each frame — 1080p is 1920×1080, or about two million pixels per frame. Because every one of those pixels has to be stored for every frame, resolution has an outsized effect on both file size and how sharp the video looks. Resizing lets you match the resolution to where the video will actually be watched, which is one of the most effective ways to control file size.

What the common presets mean

The standard heights each roughly double the pixel count of the one below. 480p(854×480) is fine for small embeds and quick previews; 720p (1280×720) is a solid HD baseline; 1080p(1920×1080) is the everyday standard for uploads and most screens; and 1440p and 2160p (4K)are for large displays and future-proofing. Jumping from 1080p to 4K quadruples the pixels — and roughly the file size — for detail most phone and laptop viewers will never see.

Downscaling shrinks files; upscaling can't add detail

Downscaling— going from a higher resolution to a lower one — is the reliable win: fewer pixels means a dramatically smaller file, and the result still looks crisp on the smaller screens it's meant for. Upscaling is the opposite trap: enlarging a 720p video to 1080p stretches the existing pixels but invents no new detail, so it just produces a bigger, softer file. To genuinely improve low-resolution footage you need AI-based enhancement, not a plain resize.

Keep the aspect ratio intact

Aspect ratio is the shape of the frame — 16:9 for most video, 9:16 for vertical Stories and Reels. If you set a custom width and height that don't match the source shape, the picture gets stretched or squished. The safe habit is to change one dimension and let the tool scale the other automatically, which preserves the original proportions every time.
