Frequently asked questions

Do I need the current password?
Yes. To unlock a PDF, you must provide the existing password. This tool cannot crack or bypass unknown passwords.
Will unlocking affect the content?
No. The document content remains identical. Only the password restriction is removed from the file.
Can I unlock owner-restricted PDFs?
Yes. If a PDF has an owner password restricting printing or copying, you can remove those restrictions by providing the owner password.
Is this legal to use?
Yes, as long as you have authorization to access the document. This tool is designed for unlocking your own password-protected files.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. All decryption happens locally in your browser. Your document and password never leave your device.

Understanding PDF Encryption

PDF files can be protected with two types of passwords: an "Owner" password (which restricts editing, printing, and copying) and a "User" password (which prevents the file from being opened at all). Standard PDF encryption uses AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with 128-bit or 256-bit keys, making the files highly secure against brute-force attacks.

How Our Unlock Tool Works

If a PDF is locked with a User password, you must know the password to decrypt it. Our tool allows you to enter the password, decrypts the file locally in your browser, and then saves a new, permanently unlocked version. This is incredibly useful for bank statements or pay stubs that you need to upload to portals that don't accept password-protected files.
