What are the Roman numeral symbols?
I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1,000. Everything else is built by combining them according to the addition and subtraction rules.
How does subtractive notation work?
A smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted from it, so IV is 4 and IX is 9, rather than writing IIII and VIIII. Only certain pairs are permitted — I can precede V and X, X can precede L and C, and C can precede D and M. This is why 99 is XCIX and not IC, a mistake almost everyone makes.
Is there a zero in Roman numerals?
No, and it is a genuinely significant absence. The system has no symbol for zero and no concept of place value, which is precisely why arithmetic in Roman numerals is so miserable and why the adoption of Hindu-Arabic numerals transformed European mathematics and accounting.
What is the largest number I can write?
In standard notation, 3,999 — MMMCMXCIX. Beyond that you need a bar over a numeral to multiply it by a thousand, a convention called the vinculum, which is rarely used and inconsistently rendered.

A system built for recording, not for calculating

Roman numerals are perfectly serviceable for writing a number down and close to useless for doing anything with it. Try multiplying XLVII by XIX and the problem becomes vivid immediately: there are no columns, no place value, and no zero, so none of the algorithms we learn in school have anywhere to stand. The Romans did not attempt it — they calculated on an abacus and used numerals only to record the result. This is precisely why the arrival of Hindu-Arabic numerals in Europe, carried by Fibonacci's Liber Abaci in 1202, was genuinely transformative rather than merely convenient. Place value and a symbol for zero made written calculation possible for ordinary merchants, and the accounting revolution that followed underwrote a great deal of what came next.

Why they survive at all

A system abandoned for arithmetic eight centuries ago is still everywhere, and the reason is that its weakness has become its function. Roman numerals are visually distinct from ordinary numbers, so they mark a category rather than a quantity — which is exactly what you want when you need to number something without confusing it with the numbers already on the page. Hence book prefaces paginated in lowercase roman before the arabic page one, chapter and act numbers, monarchs and popes, Super Bowls, the copyright year in film credits, and clock faces. In each case the numeral is not being counted with; it is being used as a label with a whiff of formality and permanence about it. The impracticality is entirely beside the point.
