The value of a blank page with no features
Note-taking software has grown extraordinarily capable — databases, backlinks, tags, templates, collaborative cursors, AI assistants — and in doing so it has made the simple act of writing something down slower. Opening a modern notes app means waiting for it to load, choosing where the note belongs, and being presented with a dozen affordances that invite you to organise rather than to think. Sometimes that is exactly right. Very often what you actually need is somewhere to put a phone number, a half-formed idea or a paragraph you are drafting before it evaporates, and every second of friction between the thought and the page is a chance to lose it. A blank text box that loads instantly and asks nothing of you is not a lesser tool; it is a different one, and for capture it is frequently the better one.
Local storage is private and fragile
Storing notes in the browser rather than on a server is a genuine trade with clear terms on both sides. What you gain is real privacy — the text never leaves your machine, no company can read it, no breach can expose it, and no account can be locked. What you give up is durability and reach. There is no sync, so the notes exist on this browser and nowhere else. Clearing your browsing data will delete them without ceremony, as will an aggressive privacy extension or a fresh install. Private browsing mode discards them when the window closes. The right mental model is a physical notepad on your desk: convenient, private, always there, and gone if the desk is cleared. Anything that matters gets copied somewhere permanent.
