Frequently asked questions

What is lorem ipsum, actually?
It is scrambled, partly nonsensical Latin derived from a passage of Cicero's 'De finibus bonorum et malorum', written in 45 BC. Typesetters have used it as filler since at least the 1500s, and it entered modern design through Letraset sheets in the 1960s and then desktop publishing software in the 1980s.
Why not just type 'text text text' instead?
Because repeated text does not behave like language. Lorem ipsum has a distribution of word and sentence lengths roughly similar to real prose, so it wraps, breaks and flows across a layout the way genuine copy will. A block of repeated identical words produces unnaturally regular line breaks and will mislead you about how the design actually holds up.
Should I ever ship lorem ipsum to production?
Never intentionally, and it happens with grim regularity anyway. Placeholder Latin has appeared in printed newspapers, on shipped product packaging, in mobile app store listings and on live corporate homepages. Search your codebase for 'lorem' before you launch — it costs a minute and has saved a great many people from acute embarrassment.

Why nonsense text is the right kind of placeholder

The whole point of lorem ipsum is that you cannot read it, and that is a feature rather than a limitation. When a client or a colleague reviews a layout containing real, meaningful English, they start reading it — and then they start editing it, and the conversation about whether the headline should say 'transform' or 'accelerate' consumes the meeting that was supposed to be about the design. Meaningless Latin blocks that reflex entirely. It looks like text, it occupies space like text, it flows like text, but it offers nothing to argue about, so attention stays where it belongs: on the typography, the hierarchy, the spacing and the composition.

Where placeholder text will mislead you

Lorem ipsum has a real weakness, and it is worth designing around. Its word lengths and rhythms are those of Latin, which is not English, and it certainly is not German, Arabic, Thai or Chinese. A layout that looks beautifully balanced in lorem ipsum can fall apart the moment real content arrives — German compound nouns overflow buttons that fitted comfortably, right-to-left scripts break an asymmetric layout, and a real product name is four times longer than 'Lorem'. Placeholder text is also relentlessly average: it never gives you the one-word headline, the person with no surname, the forty-item dropdown or the missing image. Test the layout with realistic worst-case content before you trust it, not just with pleasant Latin.
