Why composition beats weight
The scale reports a single number and tells you nothing about what that number is made of, which is why it so often misleads. Two people of identical height and weight can have entirely different body compositions, different health risks and different appearances, because one carries substantially more muscle and less fat. Someone who trains consistently for six months may see their weight barely move while their body changes considerably — muscle gained, fat lost, the two roughly cancelling on the scale. Tracking body fat percentage instead of weight resolves this, and it explains the otherwise baffling experience of looking visibly leaner while the scale stubbornly refuses to reward you.
Measure the trend, not the number
Any tape-based estimate carries meaningful error, and chasing the absolute value is a mistake. What it is genuinely good at is detecting change, because the errors are largely consistent from one measurement to the next — if you always measure at the same points, at the same time of day, with the same tape and the same tension, then a drop of two points over eight weeks is real information even if the absolute figure is off by three. So do not agonise over whether you are 18% or 21%. Measure the same way every fortnight, plot the line, and pay attention to its direction. The direction is what you can actually act on.
